Description
Special Topics Surrealism: Then and Now - This is a 100 level Art History course that will address Surrealism as both a literary movement as well as an art movement. It will cover Surrealism from its beginning stages in Paris to its influence on current art from around the globe. Surrealism was deeply influenced by Sigmund Freud and the currents of psychology in the early 20th century. Surrealist artists seek to explore the unconscious mind resulting in dreamlike, bizarre imagery. The core of Surrealism is a focus on illustrating the mind’s deepest thoughts automatically when they surface, to liberate the unconscious mind – a process known as “automatism.” Over the years, Surrealism has resulted in a fascinating collection of artwork ranging from mythical landscapes, to obscure sculpture arrangements, to intriguing depictions of people and animals. It has influenced the art and design of Sci-Fi disciplines and much of the art of the NFT movement. No prerequisites required. This course
